What is High Density Foam?

high density foam sofaIn terms of upholstery foam, the term "high density" is often misunderstood to mean foam that is especially firm or hard. However, density and firmness are independent values which have no bearing on one another. High density foam can be either soft or firm, depending on its thickness.

Technically speaking, density refers to the mass of the foam per volume. The specific density of a given upholstery foam is determined by weighing one cubic foot of foam - be it polyurethane or polyethylene. It is generally accepted that high density foam is foam with a density rating of 2.0 and above.

Another way to understand density is as a measurement of how well the foam will retain its shape under pressure. High density foams are designed to support greater weights and quickly return to their original shape once the weight is removed.

Synthetic upholstery foam comes in two varieties - closed-cell and open-cell. Under a microscope, the cells of a piece of closed-cell foam would resemble bubbles which are closed off to one another, while the cells of a piece of open-cell foam would appear as interconnected compartments. The structure of open-cell foam allows moisture and air to pass through the material.

Most conventional upholstery foams have densities of between 1.0 and 3.0 lbs. These foams are well suited for occasional-use products, including bed pillows, protective packaging and crafts projects. High density foams can have densities of as much as 15 lbs. and are ideal for use in sofa cushions, bedding, automotive seating, foam padding, and other applications.

At Gary’s Upholstery, we offer a wide range of upholstery foam for indoor furniture, outdoor and marine applications, fire retardant foam, and memory foam.
